ADRI BUILDS COMMUNITY -- AND ART!

Hopeworks youth interns are not just building websites. They are using their visual, artistic, and professional skills to help build art across their community!

Adri, a Hopeworks Web intern, has been hired by the Alliance for Watershed Education as an assistant to help create large scale sculptures out of natural materials, at multiple sites in and around Camden / Pennsauken / Camden County NJ, NW Philadelphia, and Wilmington, DE this spring and summer. They are building the sculptures with Phragmites, an invasive reed that takes over wetlands and marshes in the area.

Adri was able to leverage extensive expertise as an artist, an incredible work ethic, and project management and leadership skills to be an incredible asset to this project.

The installations will be designed and built in dialogue with the communities around each site. Once they are finished they will be activated as public spaces with teachings, performances, and other events developed in partnership with local artists and community organizations.

As Sarah Kavage, the lead artist on the project shared, “Adri is really great - hardworking, kind, positive, and smart. They will hopefully continue to work with me later in the spring when I start building the artwork, once their internship with Hopeworks is done!”

The transformation from invasive weed to a beautiful sculpture is amazing, as you can see in the photo below:
