Tianna Coleman Graduates from Camden Community College

A big congratulations to Tianna Coleman, who graduated in May from Camden Community College, earning an Associates Degree in Human Services. That’s an extra special accomplishment during a pandemic, when students not only have to learn all new material, but have to learn how to learn online, in environments that might not be as quiet or conducive to study as the typical college class or college library.

Tianna succeeded because “she’s exceptionally good at time management,” says Taylor Davis, her college success coach. Very quickly, Tianna realized she had to make an online schedule, plan out her week, and “stick to the plan. My communication skills came in very handy when talking to the professors about assignments.”

Tianna not only succeeded in the online environment, but helped her nieces in elementary school  do the same. When her niece's schools were shut down in 2020, “they lacked computer skills and were frustrated.” Tianna stepped right into action. She made sure to make their online learning space “very comfortable since they got limited breaks.” She taught her nieces “hands-on learning techniques and how to be more patient with themselves when learning online.” When they were on breaks, she took them outside to play games so they felt less isolated.

“They adapted so well,” says Tianna. “They have exceeded those challenges and are ready to learn daily. I am proud that I was able to help my nieces adapt to online learning.”

Tianna also had to adapt. She was part of a study group that used to meet in person, but had to move that online as well. Taylor says Tianna  excels at networking in her community, and among her peers  She made sure she participated in study groups for her most difficult courses.”

Tianna found the only study group very helpful. “We held each other accountable,” says Tianna. “Having my study group and the Hopeworks’ Townsend Scholars by my side helped me persevere through online classes during the pandemic. Hopeworks gave me the opportunity to obtain my degree and assist me financially and emotionally. I am so glad I found a company that will support me in various aspects of my life.”

What’s next for Tianna? She plans to work for a year so she can take a small break from school, then return to college to earn her bachelor’s degree.
